Taking to the skys across Kent

Kent has really bought into this airport expansion stuff, but there is an odd piece of good news here and there.

Sadly Manston seems to be expanding its service quickly with domestics flights, subsidised by the taxpayer and the environment. £26.99 is a ridiculous price to pay for a flight and demonstrates the government's complete unwillingness to tackle the air industry.

Lydd, on the other hand, has just lost its managing director after a public enquiry was ordered into its expansion plans. A few months ago Shepway Tories agreed to allow expansion.

The Estuary Airport (Boris Island) seems to not want to go away either. A Labour activist in Medway is now reporting renewed interest in the plan.

Frustratingly, there is little appetite by any of the big three political parties to recognise the need to put a blanket stop on airport expansion. Labour famously backed Heathrow's third runway, the LibDems have been backing expanisions in Liverpool, Manchester, Exeter and Norwich and as for the Tories...

It is high time that we kicked the cheap flight habit and the strange desire to jet off around the world on a whim every weekend. It is time that air travel paid its way with a clear financial recognition of the impact that it has on climate change.
