Of all the books I read as a child, Stig of the Dump remains one of my favourites. As I'm sure everyone will remember, Stig was the Neanderthal who re-used items from the quarry and befriended Barney who was staying with his Gran during the summer holidays.
Despite the story being a favourite, I had completely overlooked the fact that it was based in Kent a few mile from where I grew up and still live. Not only was Stig's quarry inspired by one of the many quarries in the North Downs, but the Medway Megaliths, in the shape of Kits Coty House get a mention.
