As someone who lived in Cliffe as a child, I know just how
important the North Kent marshes are. The seemingly constant stream of plans to
turn them into a concrete jungle, whether it is a massive airport,
access for a third crossing or a new town, must be fought. We have
to be reducing our impact on the planet not increasing it. This
means saying no to developments that will drastically increase our
carbon emissions or ones that will destroy precious habitats.
The Friends of North Kent Marshes have been campaigning to keep them safe against these threats and I have signed their ePetition against the airport.
These are the marshes that inspired Dickens to write: “My first most vivid and broad impression of the identity of
things, seems to me to have been gained on a memorable raw afternoon
towards evening" and "the dark flat wilderness beyond the churchyard,
intersected with dykes and mounds and gates, with scattered cattle
feeding on it, was the marshes; and that the low leaden line beyond, was
the river; and that the distant savage lair from which the wind was
rushing was the sea.” - Great Expectations
