Stuttering Lords reform

Lords reform is stuttering forward. The Tories hate it - all their friends losing their perks and power that has been handed to them with no popular mandate. Labour hate it for the same reason. Worse still for them, they are not going to be able to appoint their future cronies in there if the legislation passes.

The bill is due out next week and fortunately (I think) the ConDems are not going to go for a referendum first. While I'm not opposed to a referendum in principle, the call for one were just delaying tactics to the reform which would finally bring parliament into the 20th century (yes just the 20th...)

The time for Lords reform was a hundred years ago and yet the lure of cronyism has kept this feudal house in place. Fingers crossed that it doesn't take another 100.
