Letter to the KM on the closing of the Barracks

Dear Editor,

While much of last week's KM was rightly taken up by angst about many of the housing proposals around the Borough, many of which are ill conceived and in the wrong places, I was somewhat suprised that there was such a negative reaction to the barracks closing.

Of course, I am sure that many will be unhappy to see Maidstone's historic link with the Royal Engineers lost but this land is ideally placed for the provision of much needed homes in the town.

The scale of the housing crisis is often severely underestimated by those of us in our cosy homes yet the future looks bleak for those on low incomes, younger people and those in need.


Let us hope that this land is turned to good use by building truly affordable homes there.
