KCC misses the point with living wage
"Paying county council workers in Kent the "living wage" would cost an extra £1.4m a year." - according to a KCC report. The BBC go on to say that about 2,600 workers in KCC schools and 510 elsewhere are being paid below the living wage but that the personnel committee would "probably not" vote to take them out of poverty.
Sadly KCC have missed the point. There are enough highly paid workers in the council to take a small slice from their wages to fund this. There are 482 staff paid at or over £50k and a small average reduction of £3k to each would be enough to provide a living wage to these 3000 low paid workers.
