Ipsos MORI has put the Green Party on 6%, just 4% behind the Lib Dems on a General Election poll. That is really stunning and a great testament to the hard work done by Greens up and down the country. Just think how much higher that would be if it were an election conducted under proportional representation...

Green Party Conference
I'm leaving for North London in a few minutes for the Green Party's spring conference and the first highlight will be using the bullet train on High Speed One for the first time. A bit expensive but more regular to London at this time of the morning than the standard line.
You will note that I won't be travelling 1st class as I am a from a "a totally different type of people" according to Sir Nicolas Winterton. Who said that the Tories had thrown off this upper class image!
The conference is a great chance to get motivated for the election, to catch up with old friends, learn heaps about life and to argue policy. I am proposing significant changes to our health policy and will spend tomorrow afternoon arguing my case on the floor.

Green Party Councillor under house arrest in Egypt
Norwich councillor in Gaza house arrest.
A Norwich councillor has been placed under house arrest in Egypt after trying to reach the Gaza Strip to deliver art materials to people traumatised by the conflict in the territory.
Peter Offord, Green county councillor for Thorpe Hamlet, set off last week to join the Gaza Freedom March, a 1,000-strong international delegation calling for the borders to be re-opened to let in humanitarian aid and mark the first anniversary of a conflict with Israel which saw more than 1,400 people killed.
The 62-year-old managed to reach the Egyptian city of el-Arish, about 40km away from the Gaza Strip, but at 12pm on Sunday he was among around 30 activists who were detained in their hotel.
Road blocks have also been set up around the town, with the Egyptian security forces preventing taxis carrying people who appear to be European, from leaving, with two protesters having been stopped and
detained by police.
Mr Offord, a qualified art therapist, who hoped to visit the newly set up Palestine Trauma Centre in Gaza and donate art materials, said: “We are pretty much under house arrest. We can leave the apartments so long as we don't take our luggage with us, but the minute we pick up our bags, they stop us from leaving.
“The internet connection at the hotel has either gone down or been cut off and there are plain-clothed police at the front and back of the hotel.
“My main aim is getting the art materials to the trauma centre, so I am trying to make contact with the Egyptian Foreign Minister to see if, even if I can't go there, it would be possible for someone else to take
the materials to them.”
On New Year's Eve the group hopes to walk from Gaza City to the Erez border crossing to meet a delegation from the Israeli side comprising of Palestinians and Jews who are also calling on the Israeli government to open the border crossing.
But Mr Offord said the group was becoming increasingly frustrated and that such as meeting was looking unlikely to happen unless the Egyptian security forces relented.
He said: “We are frustrated, sad and angry. From the outset we made clear this was a peaceful protest, but as soon as we arrived they enforced a law saying it was unlawful to gather in groups of six or more, so the main protest was banned.
“We are looking at ways we might still be able to get there, but people are becoming demoralised.”
Mr Offord said the trip had still fulfilled its objective to raise awareness of the situation in Gaza and help victims of the conflict.
“It is vital that Gaza and Palestine are not forgotten by the rest of the world,” he said. “It highlights the need for both sides to come to a peaceful resolution.”

Greens ahead of LibDems in South East
It just gets better and better, the ComRes poll puts the Green Party ahead of both the LibDems and UKIP in the South East

Campaigning works - Greens on the rise
Fantastic day of campaigning today! Big Green Bus came to Maidstone and we spent a couple of hours dodging the downpours while handing out the EU Greenleaf and Green Party windmills. The reception in town was very good and matches the news today that we have doubled our rating in the polls and we are just 3% behind the Lib Dems!!!
"This morning’s survey of June 4th EU election voting intention from the telephone pollster, ComRes, that’s in the Sunday Express is even more significant. For the shares are: CON 28%: LAB 20%: LD 14%: UKIP 15%: GRN 11%: BNP 4%."
What is more in a YouGov poll to be released tomorrow (Monday 18 May), 34% of respondents
said they would either definitely be voting Green or would consider voting Green. This is the highest percentage ever to indicate potential support for the Greens.
I've started delivering the garden boards - if you want one for your garden let me know (as long as you are in Maidstone!). Another 7,000 leaflets arrive on Thursday to go out at the weekend and the rest of the time is for canvasing.

Green with envy :-)
Having to miss my first Green Party conference for a while. Sadly for me, this one looks fantastic with information on campaigns, a workshop on health democracy, motions for debate (one of which I proposed but can't now speak to), and so on. Hope people have a good time! Ian and Robin are fronting the Maidstone contingency this time.

Climate change is "the greatest threat to humanity", Ms Lucas will add, saying: "They say it's up to us - do your bit, act on CO2, we're in it together.

Green Party Conference start today
In the next hour I shall be off to possibly the most exciting GP conference we have had. This evening at 8pm our first leader and deputy leader (hopefully Caroline and Adrian) will be announced. We already punch above our weight in the media and this bold step, that has had a few vocal opponents, should help us get the message across even more:
BUSINESS AS USUAL CANNOT CONTINUE!
The right wing politics of our three major parties has continued to widen the poverty gap. Food and fuel prices are sky rocketing hitting the poor and middle income families the hardest while the rich get richer.
We need social justice.
We need community values.
We need an effective government.
We need a sustainable future.
We need Green politics and we need Green leadership.
